How Not to Get Trump
Despite their claims to the contrary, the rich men north of Richmond seem to be colluding to keep Trump in the spotlight
It is amazing that the 2015-16 Clown Show has taken up permanent residency in our election cycles. The Trump phenomenon should have fizzled as quickly as it erupted after he lost the election in 2020. Perhaps not surprisingly, powerful interests on both sides have kept it alive. The Republican base of voters will not let go of their Nero - their populist savior. And the Democrat Party leadership (along with their allies in government, media and big tech) seem to believe their best bet for a win in 2024 is to keep Trump in the spotlight. Who suffers? #thecountry
Indeed, instead of decaying into the dustbin of history, Trump and his detractors have doubled down on their antics. Both the New York and Georgia district attorneys ran on a platform in which they claimed to be the best person to “get Trump.” Once they won, they each brought dubious legal theories to bear on the leading candidate for President in the pending election. Their cases are nonetheless extremely weak and will likely be dismissed, even if it is ultimately the Supreme Court who must do so.
What has been more troubling has been the Federal Government’s response to Trump’s candidacy. The events of January 6th are the whipping post against which Big Gov has determined to beat Trump into submission. But let’s be clear - there was no coup, no insurrection. Trump has not been charged with anything close to such a thing. This event was a protest that turned violent and caused a riot for a few hours. It pales in comparison to the RussiaGate saga, claims Trump was an illegitimate President and the Mueller investigation - each of which were attempts to overturn the 2016 election of Trump as President. There has never been (nor do I expect there to ever be) a full accounting of the damage done in these efforts.
Likewise, the government’s documents case is weak, especially in the court of public opinion. There are simply way too many secrets kept from the people in our current Top Secret regime, so much so that both sets of the most recent Presidents and Vice Presidents have allegedly violated these regulations. I suspect, as the Commander in Chief, the President will ultimately be given broad latitude in this area, even after leaving office.
In full transparency, I voted for Trump twice. These were protest votes against the “rich men north of Richmond.” Our government has so many fundamental corruption problems, it may be beyond repair. But the votes for Trump in my mind were an attempt to shake up the system in Washington and express how fundamentally exhausted we are of the negligent waste and corruption that constantly emanates from DC.
In order to rid the country of this turmoil, the best thing that DC leadership can do is to focus on competency and a restoration of our institutions for good in this world. If our government were serving the needs of the people - of #thecountry - there would be no interest in a candidate like Trump. Who will step up to lead us out of this mess?
